Mohamed Salah remains the centrepiece of the Liverpool attack despite a change in management at Anfield. Arne Slot has replaced Jurgen Klopp as the new Liverpool boss, but Salah has held on to his prolific form in front of the opposition goal, as if nothing has changed.
The Egyptian has returned three goals and three assists in the first three matches of the new season. While Salah terrorising the opposition defence wearing Liverpool colours has become a norm, the Merseysiders might not get to enjoy the sight come next season.
Mo Salah Breaks Silence On Liverpool Future
Mohamed Salah has less than a year remaining on his current Liverpool contract. The 32-year-old will be a free agent in June 2025, should the Reds fail to neogtiate a new contract with him.
“I had a good summer and had a long time to myself to try to stay positive because as you know, it’s my last year at the club,” Salah said after scoring at Old Trafford in Liverpool’s 3-0 demolition of arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
“I just want to enjoy it and I don’t want to think about it. I feel like I’m free to play football and then we’ll see what happens next year.
“I was coming to the game today thinking it could be the last time. Nobody at the club has spoken to me yet about a new contract so I just play this last season and then see at the end of the season.
“It’s not up to me but nobody talk to me about a contract with the club. We’ll see.”
Salah’s Current Contract Situation Explained
Mohamed Salah’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of this season. He has repeatedly stated that he will not allow contract negotiations distract him. However, credible sources suggest that he would be receptive to extending his stay at Anfield beyond the summer of 2025.
Salah has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s recent success. Despite the Saudi Arabian siren song, his heart remains firmly rooted at Merseyside. The prospect of silverware, not monetary gain, fuels his ambition.
Salah has made it clear that it’s Liverpool’s responsibility to initiate talks about a new contract, as he doesn’t feel it’s his role to actively pursue one.
Liverpool’s apparent disinterest in opening new contract talks with the Egyptian is a curious development. His age might have prompted hestitation from Liverpool’s end, but the winger has shown that he is still in peak form with a stellar start to the new season.
If Liverpool truly intend to retain Salah, why have they delayed contract negotiations? Given that he’s free to speak with other clubs in just four months, Liverpool’s lack of urgency raises questions.
Even if contract length or wages were sticking points, those issues could be resolved. The problem is, there’s nothing on the table to discuss yet!
Traditionally, Liverpool have been reluctant to commit significant resources to signing players over the age of 30. As previously mentioned, their hesitancy with Salah may come from the same reasoning. That said, can Liverpool really afford to let an attacker of Salah’s calibre depart? This is an issue the Liverpool hierarchy must address as soon as possible.
