Chelsea Transfer Updates: Why the Blues Must Sign a New Goalkeeper

Chelsea have had a great start to the season under new manager Enzo Maresca. Even though they are winless in their last three Premier League outings, the six-time English champions were touted as title contenders in recent weeks. After finishing out of the top four in the last two seasons, the Blues seem set for a return in the European top-flight. But, there are still work to be done in the squad and getting a new goalkeeper should be the priority Chelsea transfer move. Here’s why we think so.

Why a Goalkeeper Should Be at the Top of Chelsea Transfer Wishlist

It’s impossible to overlook Chelsea’s glaring need for a new goalkeeper. Current No.1 Robert Sanchez has failed to inspire confidence, underperforming both as a shot-stopper and in his ability to play out from the back.

The Spaniard’s performances have left much to be desired, with three errors directly leading to goals in the Premier League so far. Beyond the stats, Sanchez has been a source of anxiety for fans, with his ball-playing antics causing more than a few heart-stopping moments this season.

Despite these shortcomings, Maresca has remained steadfast in his support for the player, a decision that has baffled many. While Filip Jorgensen has shown promise during his appearances in cup competitions, the Danish youngster still lacks the experience and pedigree required to be a dependable long-term solution.

Chelsea have been crying out for a top-tier goalkeeper ever since Thibaut Courtois departed for Real Madrid six years ago. The club has tried to fill the void with varying degrees of success, but no one has truly stepped up to replicate Courtois’ commanding presence between the posts.

For a side with ambitions of challenging for major honours, securing a world-class goalkeeper is non-negotiable. A reliable shot-stopper not only keeps teams in games but also instils confidence in the defence.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Chelsea have an opportunity to finally address this glaring issue and bring in a player capable of elevating them to the next level. Whether they seize it or continue to paper over the cracks remains to be seen.

Who Are The Major Transfer Targets?

January transfers are notoriously tricky, but goalkeepers tend to come with a lower price tag than players in more glamorous positions. Liverpool’s Caoimhín Kelleher has been linked as a potential target, though his impressive displays deputising for Alisson likely rule out any chance of a mid-season move.

Chelsea have also set their sights on Gregor Kobel, whose stellar form at Borussia Dortmund has caught the club’s attention. The 27-year-old Swiss international was instrumental in Dortmund’s 2023-24 Champions League campaign, recording six clean sheets in 12 matches. His brilliance has earned him consecutive inclusions in the Bundesliga Team of the Year.

Although Dortmund extended Kobel’s contract until 2028, helsea’s scouts remain convinced of his potential to reach world-class status. However, the club intends to bide their time, holding off on any approach until the summer and ruling out a January transfer.
