Chelsea have reportedly switched their focus to Newcastle United’s star striker, Alexander Isak, in their summer hunt for a new number nine. The Blues are said to be prioritising a new centre-forward to bolster Enzo Maresca’s attacking arsenal.
Isak has established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting strikers following his impressive displays for Newcastle. Since arriving at St James’ Park from Real Sociedad, the Swedish international has netted 35 goals, with 25 of them coming in his most prolific season to date in 2023/24.
Chelsea Not the Sole Admirer of Alexander Isak
Reports from the Daily Mail suggest that talks have been held between Chelsea and Newcastle after the Blues expressed their interest in bringing the 24-year-old to Stamford Bridge. According to other reports, London rivals Arsenal are also keen on Isak, with manager Mikel Arteta eager to bolster his attacking options.
However, Chelsea appear to be the more proactive club in this pursuit. Reports suggest any potential deal for Isak could see them break their club record, set last year with the Β£115m purchase of Moises Caicedo from Brighton. Isak’s market value has reportedly doubled since Newcastle acquired him from Real Sociedad for Β£63m just two years ago.
Newcaslte Want to Retain Isak, But…
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has conceded his desire to retain star striker Alexander Isak and midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this summer, following heightened interest from other clubs. However, the club has previously stated that every player has a price tag.
Earlier reports suggested Isak was close to committing his long-term future to Newcastle with a new contract at St James’ Park. However, the Daily Mail’s report throws cold water on that notion, suggesting fresh terms are not imminent.
