After failing to qualify for the Champions League, Arsenal have a big summer ahead of them and with Arsene Wenger’s future still dicey, a good summer recruitment is needed if they are to maintain a sustained title challenge next season.
Lack of Champions League football means that the quality of players available may not be top grade, but some players are still available who could be convinced to commit to the Arsenal project if they are assured of more transfer activity. Here are three players The Gunners could sign ahead of next season.
Idrissa Gueye:
The Premier League’s best tackler, surprisingly ahead of triple Footballer of the Year, N’Golo Kante. No player has attempted more tackles than the Everton enforcer, and if Arsenal are to be successful next season, they need a player who can complement their attacking play by stopping opposition play, and releasing other players with lightning counter attacking play.
Ben Gibson:
The Middlesbrough man has been one of the shining lights in the Teesiders woeful campaign this term and with his club’s relegation, he will offer a sturdy and reliable presence in Arsenal’s soft defence. He is capable of playing the Arsenal way, and is also a good tackler of the ball.
Gibson will replace the likes of Mertesacker as the German is set to leave the Emirates following his injury woes this season.
Alvaro Morata:
The 24-year-old Spaniard has grown frustrated with his substitute role at Real Madrid and is rumoured to be disillusioned with that role at Santiago Bernabeu.
He will command a huge transfer fee, and is clearly an upgrade on current first choice, Olivier Giroud. Morata will offer at least 20 goals a season and is a proven Champions League campaigner.
